Battery storage
Store your solar generation, charge from cheap overnight tariffs, and use your own energy when you need it most.
Make the most of your energy
A battery storage system lets you capture surplus solar energy that would otherwise be exported to the grid, and use it later — in the evenings, overnight, or during peak tariff periods when grid electricity is most expensive.
Battery storage also works without solar. If you're on a time-of-use tariff such as Octopus Flux, Intelligent Octopus or similar, a battery can charge overnight at low rates and discharge during expensive peak periods — reducing your bills even without any solar generation.
What battery storage can do for you
Store surplus solar
Capture solar energy generated during the day that you can't use immediately, and draw on it in the evenings and overnight instead of importing from the grid.
Charge from cheap tariffs
On time-of-use tariffs like Octopus Flux or Intelligent Octopus, charge your battery overnight at low off-peak rates and use that energy during expensive peak periods.
Increase solar self-consumption
Without a battery, a typical home might self-consume 30–40% of its solar generation. With a battery, self-consumption can rise to 70–90%, significantly reducing grid imports.
Reduce peak-time grid imports
Discharge your battery during morning and evening peak periods when grid electricity is most expensive, reducing your overall electricity costs.
Backup power capability
Some battery systems offer backup or islanding capability, keeping selected circuits running during a grid outage. We'll advise on which systems support this and what's involved.
EV charging integration
Combine battery storage with an EV charger to charge your vehicle from stored solar energy or cheap overnight grid electricity.
New battery installation
If you're having solar PV installed, adding battery storage at the same time is usually the most cost-effective approach — the electrical work is largely shared and the system can be designed as a whole. We'll size the battery to suit your roof, your usage and your tariff.
- System designed around your solar array, usage profile and tariff
- Battery sized to maximise self-consumption without over-specifying
- Inverter and battery selected to work together efficiently
- Single installation visit for solar and battery together
Retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system
If you already have solar panels, we can assess your existing system and recommend a compatible battery. The right approach depends on your current inverter, your usage patterns and your tariff. In some cases a hybrid inverter replacement makes sense; in others an AC-coupled battery is the better option. We'll explain the options clearly.
- Assessment of your existing solar system and inverter
- Recommendation of AC-coupled or DC-coupled battery depending on your setup
- Hybrid inverter replacement where appropriate
- Monitoring configured so you can see solar, battery and grid in one place
Battery storage and smart tariffs
Time-of-use tariffs have made battery storage viable even for homes without solar. Tariffs like Octopus Flux, Intelligent Octopus, and Agile Octopus offer very low overnight rates — sometimes as low as a few pence per kWh — in exchange for flexibility. A battery charged overnight at these rates and discharged during peak periods can deliver meaningful savings.
Tariff availability and rates change. We'll discuss current options and help you understand what makes sense for your situation.
Equipment we specify
We specify battery systems from established manufacturers with strong track records for reliability, software support and warranty fulfilment. Battery technology and the market are both evolving quickly — we keep up to date with what's available and specify equipment we're confident in.
We'll discuss the specific equipment we're proposing for your installation and explain why we've chosen it.
